Intro: Knowing God personally – God wants us to know Him deeper.
We are saved not just from something but, to something – a personal relationship with Him!
I. What he (Paul) once had, Philippians 3:4-6. If anyone could save himself by what he did – Paul could have. See also Romans 7:18 and James 2:10.
II. What he (Paul) discounted, Philippians 3:7-8. Paul realized the difference between being religious and the value of knowing Christ Jesus on the Damascus Road, Acts 9:10-18 and Acts 22:12-16. Paul’s conversion changed him. Paul now knows Christ Jesus personally as Lord. Paul knew once saved, always saved.
III. What he (Paul) desired, Philippians 3:9-11. Paul wanted to be found not on the basis of the Law but, on the basis of faith. Millions know a lot of facts, James 2:19. Paul is looking ahead to be found in Christ. So Paul knew that all who desire to be saved on the basis of faith will suffer.
Personal Application:
1. Do you have liabilities in your life you are counting as assets? See Romans 3:1-2 and Romans 9:4-5.
2. How much does knowing Jesus Christ mean to you? See Matthew 13:44-46.
3. What drives your life? What makes you get up? What are you living for? Is there a passion in your heart to know Jesus? You can’t know Him in an intimate way until you know Him in a saving way!
Do you know God – Christ, really know or just about Him?
