Theme of Philippians: The person of Christ and our relationship with Him.

Theme of Philippians 4: Rejoicing in Christ.

Intro: Paul is under house arrest and chained to a Roman guard and yet he is still rejoicing!

Paul affirms his sense of belonging in the body, Philippians 4:1. Paul deeply loves these people.

I.                   We are to be known for our harmony, Philippians 4:2-3. These women were at odds with each other and Paul was very direct, naming names. Paul is using a Biblical principle, Matthew 18:15-17. Live in harmony (how?) in the Lord.
See Philippians 1:27, Philippians 2:2 and Philippians 2:14-15.

II.                  We are to be known for our rejoicing, Philippians 4:4.
We are instructed/commanded to rejoice in the Lord. We can rejoice that our name is in The Book of Life and we can serve, etc.

III.               We are to be known for our forbearance, Philippians 4:5. Willingness to yield one’s personal rights. See 1 Timothy 3:2-3 and Titus 3:2.

Personal Application

·         Are you right with your brother/sister?

·         Are you rejoicing in the Lord?

You need to, because when we rejoice in the Lord our perspective changes.

Joy is not related to our circumstances.

·         Do you have a yielding spirit? For the Lord is near!

Key Verse: Philippians 1:21

The Book of Life is The Registry in Heaven!

Intro: God has put us in a material world not to be covetousness, but to be content, either rich or poor.
This is a book that meets us where we live, ministry within church.

I. Paul’s instruction to the poor, see John 14:26, Matthew 10:40 and Luke 10:16.
Paul said that we have no right to manipulate the New Testament Epistles;
to rebel against the Teaching is the same as rebelling against Christ.

I.        Paul’s instruction to the contended poor, 1 Timothy 6:6. These are people who are
satisfied with the necessities of life.

II.      Paul’s instruction the covetous poor, 1 Timothy 6:9.  These are people who lack contentment.

II. Paul’s instruction to the Pastor.

I.        Paul’s ethical appeal to Timothy, 1 Timothy 6:11.

II.      Paul’s personal appeal to Timothy, 1 Timothy 6:12 and Jude 1:3.

III.    Paul’s doctrinal appeal to Timothy, 1 Timothy 6:13-16.

III. Paul’s instruction to the prosperous.

I.        Paul’s teaching on the dangers of being rich, 1 Timothy 6:17.

II.      Paul’s teaching on the materialism of being rich, 1 Timothy 6:18-21.

Personal Application:

·         Be happy with things you have.

·         Don’t live beyond your means it leads to harmful desires.

·         For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, such as wandering away from the faith.

For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
1 Timothy 6:7

Theme: Knowing Christ - Knowing God personally. We were saved into a relationship with the Living God!
Intro: He saved us from the just wrath we deserve to the saving grace of a just God.
I. A goal to reach for, Philippians 3:12-13. Paul forgot the past and looked forward to the future with God’s truth.
II. An example to follow, Philippians 3:16. Keep focused.
III. A destruction to weep over, Philippians 3:18-19. Paul is contrasting believers and non-believers walk/manner of Christian life,
see Ephesians 4:1, Ephesians 4:17, Ephesians 5:15 and 1 John 1:7.
Here is the example/rationale, Acts 20:29-32, Paul often warned about non-Christians.
Paul is sensitive to their eternal damnation because they are not saved, see 1 Corinthians 1:17-18.
Saved by faith alone, Christ alone, see Galatians 2:21.
Warnings: see Matthew 7:15, Matthew 25:46, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 and Mark 9:48.
Hell is a Dramatic place, which is why it took a Dramatic act to conquer it-Golgotha!
IV. A future to long for, Philippians 3:20-21. Jesus, The King someday is coming back. We need to eagerly wait, see John 14:2-3.
Right after you die your spirit goes, see 1 Corinthians 15:51.

Personal Application:
1. God uses real flesh and blood models to help us put into practice the Christian life.
2. We are called to live as aliens because our citizenship is in Heaven,
see 1 Peter 1:8-9 and 1 Peter 2:11.
3. If we don’t come to know Christ it will be eternally disastrous!!!!!

Intro: A turning point in Jesus’ Ministry, His public ministry is over. His hour has come, now is the Lord’s Supper. He would drink from the cup of God’s wrath. Jesus loves them in service, sermons and sacrificial death. See also Luke 22:14-16 and Luke 22:24-27.
I. A demonstration of pure servant hood, John 13:1-11. John 13:5 is an example of effective service that never would be forgotten, a lesson on pure servant hood. In John 13:8-9, Peter, like many of us, is trying to take control of what the Lord is freely giving. The “bath” symbolized Salvation. When you are born again you get a Spiritual bath, Revelation 1:5. Water has no power to wash away sin, Colossians 2:13
II. A declaration of pure servant hood, John 13:12-17. We aught to become a servant to all, John 13:15. We are not blessed in knowing if we are not doing, see John 13:17.

Personal Application:
1. Jesus Christ today would like you to wash His feet. Would you wash His feet? Only (our) pride will prevent us. See Matthew 25:40.
2. Jesus wants to wash your feet, but again, it is only (our) pride that will prevent Him.

Intro: This reminds us that God saved us not only from something but to something - A  personal relationship with Himself.
Theme: Knowing Christ and knowing God personally.
I. A goal to reach for, Philippians 3:12. This is a contrast to what has been said. Paul wants to know the Lord more intimately, Philippians 3:10-11.
II. An example to follow, Philippians 3:13-14. Brethren refers to brothers and sisters. The goal is to pursue the goal until the day we die. Seeking to be more like Christ will glorify Christ and make a right attitude.

Personal Application:
1. The way we come to learn of Jesus Christ is through the Word of God, The Bible.
2. We can learn from imperfect people because they follow Christ, Philippians 3:17. Follow Paul’s example and pursue the same goal.
3. Get your priorities in order - Philippians 3:15-16.
To know Christ and become more and more like Him you glorify God!

Intro: Through prayers, faith, and devotion a mother is the heart of a home. Hannah is crushed over her inability to have a baby and she goes directly to the Lord in prayer. Hannah knew God was/is bigger than culture, see Judges 21:25 and 1 Samuel 1:1-2. Samuel was born at a time of great darkness.
Principle #1: We ought to begin raising child even before baby is conceived, see 1 Samuel 1:11. Hannah has gone to God first in prayer and is praying specifically before the baby was conceived.
Principle #2: The children God blesses you/me and Hannah with should beseen as a gift from God and given back to Him, see 1 Samuel 1:20. Hannah made a Nazirite vow, see 1 Samuel 1:11 and Numbers 6:5.
Principle #3: Never waiver in your prayer life, see James 5:16. Hannah is going to God first for help, see 1 Samuel 1:12-16. Hannah knew in faith God had spoken directly to Eli and she was glad in the Lord, see 1 Samuel 1:17-18.
Principle #4: Understand the battle is won or lost in the small things of life, see 1 Samuel 1:19-22. Hannah’s maternal wisdom is evident, see 1 Samuel 1:23-28. Samuel saw his mother go to the House of the Lord. Samuel is used by God to anoint David, see 1 Samuel 3:19-20 and 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Personal Application:
1. We can go directly to God in prayer, like Hannah.
2. If you want Godly children - you need to be a Godly person, see Isaiah 58:13-14 and Exodus 20:8.
3. A Godly home produces Godly children, see 1 Samuel 2:26 and Luke 2:52.
4. God has a plan for each one of our children and every position is significant to the Lord, see Psalm 37:4 and 3 John 1:4.
5. What mother’s do is important to God, see Titus 2:5 and 2 Timothy 1:5.

Intro: Knowing God personally - God wants us to know Him deeper.
We are saved not just from something but, to something - a personal relationship with Him!
I. What he (Paul) once had, Philippians 3:4-6. If anyone could save himself by what he did - Paul could have. See also Romans 7:18 and James 2:10.
II. What he (Paul) discounted, Philippians 3:7-8. Paul realized the difference between being religious and the value of knowing Christ Jesus on the Damascus Road, Acts 9:10-18 and Acts 22:12-16. Paul’s conversion changed him. Paul now knows Christ Jesus personally as Lord. Paul knew once saved, always saved.
III. What he (Paul) desired, Philippians 3:9-11. Paul wanted to be found not on the basis of the Law but, on the basis of faith. Millions know a lot of facts, James 2:19. Paul is looking ahead to be found in Christ. So Paul knew that all who desire to be saved on the basis of faith will suffer.

Personal Application:
1. Do you have liabilities in your life you are counting as assets? See Romans 3:1-2 and Romans 9:4-5.
2. How much does knowing Jesus Christ mean to you? See Matthew 13:44-46.
3. What drives your life? What makes you get up? What are you living for? Is there a passion in your heart to know Jesus? You can’t know Him in an intimate way until you know Him in a saving way!
Do you know God - Christ, really know or just about Him?

How The Cross Effected Three Men’s Lives

April 26th, 2009

How The Cross Effected Three Men’s Lives
Notes on the sermon (April 26, 2009)
given by Jerry Stokes

Intro: Are we (you and me) following Jesus? Maybe like Peter, although not verbally we denied Christ by our actions.
I. First is a Christian, a follower of Jesus, a man named Peter. See Matthew 26:31-35 and Matthew 26:57-75 when we take our eyes off Jesus we start hanging around with the wrong crowd. See also Luke 22:61. See Matthew 16:4-7 and John 21:7-8.
See also John 21:15 -So, is there anything in your life that Jesus takes second place to?
II. Second is a religious man, a man named Nicodemus. See John 3:1-9 and 2 Corinthians 5:17. New Birth produces New Life! Nicodemus is now willing to be identified with Jesus, see John 19:38-40.
III. Third is a lost man, who is delaying getting saved, a man named Felix. See Acts 24:22-25. Felix is not saved for he is waiting for a convenient time/season. Where will your soul spend eternity? See John 3:36.

IV. The three steps to restore our fellowship with God:
1. a broken heart, see Psalm 51:1-19.
2. Confession, see 1 John 1:9.
3. True repentance - Is when we finally stop doing what we are repenting of, see Luke 15:17-20.

Personal Application:
1. Life doesn’t have to be complicated - see John 3:16.
It is not about being religious - it is about believing in Jesus!
2. DANGER!  Putting off salvation is - Putting off going to Hell.

3. God is the God of second chance!

Philippians 1:21 summarizes the book of Philippians.

Exalting
Christ
Imitating
Christ
Knowing
Christ
Rejoice
In Christ
Philippians 1:20  Philippians 2:5  Philippians 3:8  Philippians 4:4

Theme: Knowing Christ, for we are to grow in the knowledge and grace of God. We are to be growing in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, John 17:3.
I. The declaration of the Christian, Philippians 3:1.
A. The need to rejoice.
B. The sphere in which we are to rejoice.
C. The reminder to rejoice.
(Why are we to sit up and listen - it is a safeguard for you.) Discontent leads to disobedience as in 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. Do not grumble, see Exodus 16:7-8 and Philippians 2:14.
II. The demise of the Christian, Philippians 3:2.
A. Beware of their character.
B. Beware of their bad conduct.
C. Beware of their creed - followers of false gospels. The greatest evil of all is to lead people with a false gospel!
III. The distinctive characteristic of the Christian, Philippians 3:3.
A. We are the true circumcision, we’ve had circumcision of the heart.
B. We worship in the Spirit of God, John 4:23-24.
C. We glory in Christ Jesus, we place no confidence in ourselves. We look purely on the mercy of God.
Personal Application:
1. Don’t despair - Rejoice in the Lord!
2. Religious activity is not a replacement of second birth. If you are not born again then you are not a Christian. We need to be born again to have a second birth.
3. Do you have the marks of a second birth? Do you worship in the Spirit? Do you glorify Christ or do you put confidence in the flesh?

He is Risen!

Intro: The best news ever told. Most important news in human history. ‘He is not here. He has risen’ see Matthew 28:6. His death, burial, and resurrection will effect the destiny of us all! Gospel: power of God for salvation. The Gospel challenges the intellect, challenges emotions and challenges the will.
I. The Investigation of Peter and John, see John 20:2-10.
A. Their receipt of the news, see John 20:1-4.
B. Their reaction to the news, see John 20:5-8.
II. The Investigation of Mary Magdalene, see Luke 8:2.
A. Mary’s distress, see John 20:1 and John 20:11-13. Mary showed her grief, see John 20:14-15.
B. Mary’s delight, see John 20:16-18.
III. The Investigation of Doubting Thomas.
A. Thomas’ Doubts as they are revealed, see John 20:24-25. Thomas would not believe the reports even of those of whom he knew.
B. Thomas’ Doubts as they are resolved, see John 20:26-28.
Personal Application: You have to ask yourself-
1. What will I do with the evidence of the empty tomb? The empty tomb is God’s receipt, God has paid in full your debt on Calvary!
2. What are the implications of my decision? God made a provision for everyone, see Acts 24:15. We are to have joy and compassion, see 2 Timothy 4:1-2.
3. What am I gonna do about it today? What will you do: go away untouched or respond?
Notes:
*Do you worship Jesus Christ? See Revelation 5:1-14.
*Faith without sight, see John 20:29 and 2 Corinthians 5:7.
